Sydney & Wollongong Fishing Report
Offshore has been fishing really well the last few weeks with no sight of it slowing down. There have been consistent catches of striped marlin down off Jervis Bay canyons and the kink. Also plenty of good sized kingfish being caught down that way off point perpendicular.
Joel, Jesse, Grady and Ben have all had their fair share over the last couple weeks down south, all getting stuck right into the striped marlin.
The rest of the offshore action is up Sydney way with striped and blue marlin off the shelf.
Dolphinfish up to 15kg being caught off the Port Hacking FADs when the water was a bit clearer.
Botany Bay has been on fire lately for a wide range of species. Some big jewfish have been caught up to 1.5m in the Bay. There have also been plenty of kingfish caught as well, nothing huge but reports of good numbers about.
The bream in the bay have been around in big numbers, and they’re some of the biggest bream we’ve seen caught for a while. Nick had a great time in the bay scoring this nice bag of cracking bream.
There’s also been reports of trevally caught in Botany Bay and a whole heap of flathead.
Reports of big jewfish being caught up the Georges River, one fish going 30+kg.
Rod also managed this cracking bream while fishing in the Port Hacking recently.
Guys fishing off the rocks and in the washes are getting good catches of bream, drummer and blackfish. John fished off along the Royal National Park for a mixed bag of kingfish, bonito, and striped tuna. The bigger kingfish were caught between 30m and the cliffs on live yellowtail and squid.
Myles and Freddie have been doing well in Sydney Harbour lately, these fish were both caught in the last few days.
Jackson Sweet managed a nice bass fishing in a small creek up the Woronora River shortly after all the rain we got the other week. The Zman Finesse Frogz in col mud minnow did the trick for him. He simply cast out and wound it back in, letting the legs wobble as they were designed to.
Simon Pender also had some luck on the Bass after the rains, with this solid fish caught on a spinner with a small minnow trailer soft plastic attached.
Reports of lots of whiting being caught off the beaches around the Illawarra recently.
Hill 60 and Bass Point are still go to spots for those chasing Bonito at the moment, coconut rigs, G-control lures and Pin Tail 35g Lures are the most used right now.
Inside Port Harbour there have been a number of frigate mackerel and mac tuna caught.
Lake Conjola has finally been opened right up properly for the first time in years, making it a whole lot more enjoyable down there. Clear waters, a running tide, and plenty of fish activity! Mitch and I went down mid last week and fished around for a nice mixed bag. The lure of the day by far was the Artist FR80 in colour PWH. First cast I landed a thick and healthy 69cm flatty followed shortly by four more smaller flathead.
All fish were caught by casting into the deeper part of the drop-off from a sand flat on the run out tide, then working the lure up and along the drop off. The technique was incredibly simple, I cast, let it sink to the bottom, wound in the slack line, gave the rod a decent yank – lifted the rod probably about 45 degrees into the air quite quickly so I could feel the lure work as it was jerked – and then let in sink back down with a 2 second pause as I wound in the slack. Every fish hit the lure in that 2 second period it was dropping down or sitting on the bottom, so the pause is crucial! Also some other bream and whiting caught on both the Bottom Magic Lure and the Jackson Tiny Squid soft plastics.
